Discovering a Hidden Gem in Moraga: Lou’s Chicken Shop is a Must-Try!

If you’ve driven past the Rheem Valley Shopping Center lately (right next to the Rheem Theatre), you might have spotted a new sign: Lou’s Chicken Shop. Don’t let the understated storefront fool you — this place is quietly serving some of the best chicken sandwiches and Hawaiian-Japanese fusion plates I’ve had in the entire East Bay. I stopped in last week and left completely obsessed. Here’s exactly what you need to order.

1. The Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich

Crispy, juicy, perfectly seasoned fried chicken on a buttery brioche bun with tangy slaw and pickles. It’s classic done to absolute perfection. One bite and your eyes will involuntarily close — it’s that good.

2. The Garlic Soy Glaze Chicken Sandwich (My Personal Favorite)

Dangerously addictive. That sweet-salty garlic soy glaze caramelizes around the edges of the fried chicken, and the swipe of sriracha aioli brings just the right heat. I’m still daydreaming about it.

3. The Rice Plate

When you’re really hungry (or just smart), go for the rice plate:

Protein options: Buttermilk Chicken, Caramel Fish Sauce Chicken, Karaage Chicken (with yuzu aioli), Garlic Soy Chicken, Kalua Pork, Teriyaki Grilled, and more.
Veg options: Mixed Greens, Kimchi, Pickled Daikon & Carrots, Spicy Sesame Cabbage Slaw, Jalapeño Cabbage Slaw

My current obsession: Garlic Soy Chicken + Spicy Sesame Cabbage Slaw
Runner-up: Karaage Chicken + Kimchi

With so many combos, you could eat here every week and never repeat the same plate.

4. Honey Jalapeño Tater Tots with Dashi Ranch

These are officially the best tater tots on the planet right now. Ultra-crispy, drizzled with honey-jalapeño sauce (sweet heat perfection), and served with umami-packed dashi ranch for dipping. I ordered them as a “side” and they stole the entire show.

The Verdict

Lou’s Chicken Shop feels like the kind of spot that could go viral the moment the greater Bay Area discovers it. The chicken is next-level, the flavors are bold yet balanced, portions are massive, prices are fair, and the staff is genuinely friendly.

Next time you’re in Rheem Valley asking yourself “what’s for lunch (or dinner)?”, just head straight to Lou’s. Your taste buds will thank you.
